I think you can shout multiple times, but there is a limit so you can't flood the board.

Work Week - Day 12

Fri Nov 20, 2009, 4:49 PM
  • Mood: Defeated
  • Reading: Thousand Leaves
Header

So last week, having already worked 5 days, it was announced that we were going to be required on the weekends too.

Not fun. We worked 10 hours Saturday and 4 hours Sunday so that we could all start over on Monday with a new week. Today around 9AM I ran out of care. It's hard to stay productive when you've put in 116 hours in two weeks with no time off, and it showed, I'm sure. I've been exhausted and worn out all weekend, and generally unhappy.

In the last couple weeks I interviewed for a training position at work. I enjoy teaching and the training job would be a nice addition to my resume and something to make work fun. I interviewed okay, I did a demo training session that was well received and they offered me the position. Of course I accepted! Now it looks like after all that the technology group I currently work for doesn't want to give me up to the training group. I'm too skilled, and they won't let me move to training until someone else is at my level. Not to sound too prideful, but that could take a while. I've been at my job for months, the new people have been there weeks and it's going to take a few months to get them up to speed.

So I'm out of the game and the training people are looking externally now. I've lost out on jobs because I was external and a company wanted to hire internally before...I've never lost out because I was internal and they wanted to hire external before. It seems a rather harsh reward for being competent.

Another funny anecdote from the last two weeks at work...the account manager for our BU came to the techs and said, "You've all been doing a great job and we'd like to reward you. What would you like?"

10 year employee who just moved from corporate HQ in NYC to SLC says, "Well, what have they rewarded you guys with in the past?"

Literally, crickets. Our rewards so far have been things like Federally mandated overtime pay for mandatory overtime and "we haven't fired you." Bonuses? Incentives? Motivation? In this economy? Who are we kidding? (Or so we're told in various ways)

Was kind of hilarious in a stab-stab sort of way.

In other news...I think my truck is going to kill me. The steering is awful, and I'm tired of replacing front-end parts that seem to be made of cheese. Should a Pitman Arm really wear out every 6000 to 9000 miles? My electrical is failing, the transmission leaks, the A/C is temperamental...

So I'm trying to replace it. I found a car for sale in the area yesterday and contacted the seller. I'm thinking it's time for something made in the 21st century instead of some 15 year old American hunk o' junk. 150000 miles is enough for the truck, it's time to move on. Hopefully I'll have a new vehicle before 2010!

I've been playing Assassin's Creed obsessively for a while, got it on Steam with BioShock and L4D2. I'm preparing for sequels! I want AC2 and BioShock 2 already, but they won't be on Steam for a while...

Top Gear season 14 has started so it's back to bit-torrent for BBC automobile goodness...

Hulu keeps me sane a lot of evenings...

And this weekend I'm going to be up north with my Roo having a good time and relaxing. Huzzah!

Currently Working On:

  • Getting used to the new job

  • The great furry short story/novel/thingy...or something...writing stuff...blah

Hey there, Husky dude.
I just wanted to say thanks for liking the new shoes, even though they look like they were turned out by the shoemaker elves who go out and get blitzed when they're on-call.
